OUGD406: Studio Brief 03 - Group Contract

Me:
I made a press pack that included a UV pen, postcard advertising the exhibition and a personalised message on the reverse in UV ink to the design studios. A business card type thing with our social media links and mock ups.

Alejandro:
Explored the funeral concept of money. Once the concept was chosen, made mock ups for posters in social media. After the first presentation explored the stock exchange style with a quick mock up.

Katie:
Created the way finding for the exhibition.

Alice:
Focused largely on the exploration the the exhibition space itself, looking at ways in which it may be expressed in order to suit our themes. Her deliverables were the of mounted text, an introduction wall, the manipulating of the aircon, and a logo.

Nicky:
Did the initial concept and established the typeface as the base of the identity.

Connor:
Looked into the name and such for the exhibition and produced an invite.

OUGD406: Studio Brief 02 - Individual Practice - Licence to Print Money Page - Final Design

Print: Screen Print

Inks: Metallic silver and gold ink.

Stock: G.F Smith. Plike. 120gsm. Black.

Concept: A note that reflects space and a currency that can be used universally and globally.  The infinity symbol shows the value of money because this is meant to be similar to being able to use a card. The amount of credit inside is limitless similar to a credit card. This is so it can be connected through the internet and other methods similar to bitcoin, apple pay and paypal because those are the current future of money.  They are limitless methods to use as an alternative to money. Simplistic colours to appeal to both genders and all ages. The line creates a contactless payment and counterfeit.

OUGD406: Studio Brief 03 - Press Pack

Press kits are commonly used for:
  • Product launches
  • New company launch
  • Mergers and acquisitions
  • News conferences
  • Large events / Industry trade shows

Common components

  • Backgrounder with historical information on the company or individual.
  • Fact sheet listing specific features, statistics, or benefits.
  • Biographies of key executives, individuals, artists, etc.
  • Past press coverage
  • Photos or other images (high resolution) of key executives, logos, products, etc.
  • press release detailing the current news the media kit is sent in reference to

Band press kits

Press kits are a common promotional tool used by musicians when launching a new album. Band press kits often have their own unique set of components, including:[citation needed]
  • Band biography / History of the band
  • CD
  • Color photos (many corporate photos are done in black and white for newspaper print purposes)
  • Contact information for the band's label, manager, publicist, or other representative
  • Discography (all previous albums released by the band)
  • Equipment list (if the kit is being sent to live music venue)

Our press pack:

We discussed earlier on to create a press pack in a box to send to design studios to invite them to the exhibition. It would include a small postcard or leaflet with the even time and space and on the reverse side a UV message hand written to them to give it a personalised factor. The package would also include a UV pen so that they could see the message. This makes it more interactive.

OUGD406: Studio Brief 04 - Reflective Practice - Speaking From Experience - Digital Design Ideas

After looking at this without the grid. It still looked too empty. So I separated the weekdays into columns.

Feedback:

Ahh it looks so good! It's a little plain tho? Could you add some coloured lines for them to write on maybe? It looks very formal? It looks amazing tho!"

"Yeahhhh that looks cute! Maybe like greens and yellows? They're quite neutral?"

Maybe not pink but perhaps the colour could be added like this.

Another piece of feedback I was given was:

"Love the writing and typography, and I think you need to space the days of the week out across the page, maybe set 1 inch or Half 1 inch margins around the page and spread them inbetween that so that there's more space to write"

And in regards to colour:

"That's alright! Yeah yellow with little white dots would be super cute and would work for both genders"

Taking into consideration that this would be mass produced. Maybe create it in grey scale so that it is cheaper to make:

Questions:

Should I abbreviate the week days?

"Could work. The style of type you have chosen would not work with abbreviations."

"I'd work with the style of type as small scale. It's not particularly visible. However, I do like the design."

"3 letter abbreviations would work quite well."

"I'm not a fan of abbreviations."

What should I change or take into consideration within this design?

"Add some supporting imagery to make look less like a chore. :)"

"Really fun colours could be used to make chores seem more 'fun.'"

"Too much space is taken up by the design (title), utilise space per writing."

"More space for days of the week, less space for goals and "exciting adventures" - gives people more room to plan and add things during the week."

"There are a lot of weekly planners out there, how can you make yours different?"

"Would it be appealing to boys?"

Is there a better way I could display the goals and exciting adventures part?
Exciting adventures are meant to be fun things you have planned for after you have finished your goals.

"Could that be a separate poster?"

"Are they necessary? Perhaps add them as a part of the week table?"

"Look at printing vinyl and sticking onto a whiteboard so that the design is editable by the user."

"Looks good. Perhaps add graphics terms like font, point size."

Any other feedback:

"Fun and intimidating, perhaps use colours and a style that would appeal to both sexes."

"Maybe try splitting the design into three different sheets."

OUGD406: Studio Brief 04 - Reflective Practice - Speaking From Experience - Layout

Taking all of the feedback into consideration. As a first digital layout design I have created this as a template for an A4 desk pad.

I personally think this looks too simplistic and not personal enough to me or my visual identity. With this brief there is an opportunity to make it more personal. I'm going to add some hand rendered typography to improve it and make it look more interesting.

OUGD406: Studio Brief 04 - Reflective Practice - Speaking From Experience - Sketches and Feedback

"day one and overall one
to see what is possible to do during the day
dates bit for deadlines
goals, what you're aiming to get planned before then
calming quotes"

"one without days of week on the top like a month one
maybe like a two week one
having it set out like a month looks really intimidating"

OUGD406: Studio Brief 04 - Reflective Practice - Speaking From Experience - Ideas Feedback

Which concept do you prefer? The planner or the motivational poster?

"One that motivates you feel better about yourself and one that actually helps you."

"It feels like one is mental and one is physical. The list feels like you're actually doing something. The other is more or less just motivation for others not just yourself."

"The list and time management idea. If I was to sum up your first year. You're very organised. Well you were before but now deadlines are here you're not. Shade."

"Well you have said already you put the not just a graphic designer aspect as your PPP so that could be your self branding. Go with the timetable."

"The timetable was something I was looking for before I started uni so I prefer that concept.
