OUGD405: Studio Brief 02 - Information Design Page - Initial Spreads & Ideas

Different types of leaflet folds

The initial designs for spreads was to create the leaflet as an image relating to the drink driving informational video. An image like the car drawn out like that seems very childish because it looks like a cartoon. It takes away the serious aspect. However, if it was two images of real cars then once the page is unfolded like in the diagram above it begins to look like a collision which is the biggest consequence of drink driving. This concept reminds me of this ad campaign by:

POWA (People Opposing Women Abuse) - 'Force'

The idea behind this piece of advertisement is that the two pages are stuck together so that the reader has to force the pages open. It reads "if you have to use force, it's rape." The concept of this layout is really effective because it places the reader in the position of power then gives them the fact. This could be adapted to the drink driving advertisement because if the car looks like a collision then you made the conscious decision to drive whilst drunk. It's places the reader in a position of blame. This also maintains the serious aspect of the message being conveyed whereas if it was just a hand drawn car it would look like bumper cars and have a friendly tone of voice. It would remove the danger and add a comical aspect which is not what I want to convey in this brief. I want the audience to understand the danger of drink driving similar to the Think! campaigns instead of "Stupid Git, John Altman" where it makes a slightly comical approach to appeal to the younger audience. I think that a younger audience should not be dismissed just because they are young. It should not dismiss the serious nature of drink driving. Younger people are seen as reckless but if you make them feel like the adult and put them into the position of power (similar to the ad above) it makes the audience unsettled.

This would purely be the large image and a tag line or statistic. So that it is simple and grabs the audiences attention.

There are more basic designs. If the leaflet was going to be posted door to door. I want to use an envelop as the layout then all of the information can be provided inside of it instead of using a separate piece of paper. This will be more cost effective, especially if posting door to door. I sketched out different designs of how the layout could be.

This would include infographics and mostly text. If not it would only have text.

The red dot is a sticker you would use to open it and the red is supposed to signify a stop; as in you should stop before you get into a car and decide and to drink drive.
